Public Access Test: What is the Public Access Test?

The Public Access Test (PAT) is a standard certification process that evaluates whether a dog has the necessary skills and demeanor to work in public as a service dog. Whether your dog is being trained for mobility assistance, psychiatric support, or any other service, passing the PAT is crucial for their future role.

This is the formal training methodology Clear Choice Canine curriculum's are structured, with consistent terminology across your obedience, Board & Train, and K9 programs.

1. Acquisition —

1. Acquisition — Teach the Behavior The dog learns the desired behavior and begins to understand the cue. Training focuses on clear communication, proper timing, motivation, and rewarding correct responses.

2. Fluency —

Build Reliability The dog develops consistency and accuracy in performing the behavior. Training gradually increases duration, distance, and difficulty while reducing reliance on assistance.

3. Generalization —

Apply the Behavior The dog learns to perform the behavior in different environments, situations, and around varying levels of distraction. The goal is to help the dog understand that the behavior applies beyond the original training setting.

4. Maintenance —

Preserve the Behavior The dog continues to practice and perform the behavior over time. Regular reinforcement and periodic training help maintain reliability and prevent previously learned behaviors from deteriorating.
